Wooden Boats for Veterans

Board of Directors

Terry emigrated with his parents from Ireland to the Bay Area grew up aboard boats in Sausalito. After graduating from St. Ignatius in San Francisco he entered the Naval Academy, graduating in the Class of 1988. Terry served as a naval aviator, flying the F-14 Tomcat, and was recalled to active duty for service in Iraq, finishing his career as commander of the Navy’s first MQ-9 Reaper unmanned unit. In business Terry has held a variety of management responsibilities in aerospace engineering and program management. He lives in Sausalito with his wife Jen and is a USCG licensed captain for 100 ton vessels in inland and near coastal waters.
As the proud father of a Marine, Terry understands the challenges many face in transitioning to civilian life, and how difficult it often is to secure the services veterans have earned from the VA. Terry founded WBFV as a means to support veterans overcoming their operational service and to ensure they get the benefits they have earned. He decided that his passion for sailing should be used to help veterans; and choosing the unique pursuit of restoring wooden boats is an effective means of serving this purpose. The discipline of wooden boat ownership, restoration, and sailing is a timeless way of life that centers and grounds its participants. "Just Add Salt Water, and do it on a wooden boat if you can". To date over 500 veterans have done just that.
